Gun Servicing & Safety

Over the years we have been continually disturbed by the condition of game guns presented for use by shooters at the school. In extreme cases we have not allowed them to be used and offered an alternative from those we hold. Generally these guns are:

Many of them are beyond repair at any cost. They should be scrapped, or deactivated and kept as a wall piece.

For your safety please have them checked and, if necessary, repaired. Also, look at the chequering and, if necessary, have it re-cut. A totally smooth fore-end will behave like an eel on a wet day. You are likely to lose control and drop it and shoot yourself, or worse Me!

If the guns proof marks say 2½" chambers (65 - 67.5mm), use cartridges to match, not 2¾" (70mm). The gun will shake itself lose and possibly blow up. Check suitability with your cartridge provider .

If you own a 20 bore and a 12 bore, never mix the cartridges. I count 20 bores into my bag and then pick up the spent cases and reconcile the result. Over careful - not really, I’ve only got two hands.
